What counts as Finance and insurance

The industry is section K of UK SIC 2007 (divisions 64 to 66). Division 66 has the most businesses: the ONS index puts insurance brokers in 66.22 and financial advisers and mortgage brokers in 66.19.

Holding companies (64.20) own other companies rather than trading; most buyers leave them out. Banks and insurers are few but large: the export shows the company, not every branch.

FCA Financial Services Register: one firm at a time

In the UK nearly all financial service activities must be authorised or registered by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA); some firms are authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA).

FS Register
The Financial Services Register is a public record of firms and individuals authorised now or in the past by the FCA or the PRA. It is built for checking a firm; data extracts are a service the FCA sells.
Appointed representatives
Many brokers and advisers are appointed representatives: they act on behalf of an authorised principal, which is responsible for them. The register shows both.
Companies House
Banks, insurers and brokers that are companies or LLPs are on the Companies House register. The free Companies House snapshot has no phone numbers, emails or websites, and sole-trader advisers are not registered at Companies House.

Lender, insurer or intermediary: three target groups

If you sell to intermediaries, start with 66.22 for insurance brokers and 66.19 for advisers and mortgage brokers. Banks, building societies and insurers are a short list of large organisations; there a list mainly helps to complete your CRM.

The SIC code is chosen by the company, so a broker can turn up in 66.22, 66.19 or 66.29. Ask for neighbouring codes when completeness matters more than precision.

Firms trading as a Ltd, PLC or LLP are corporate subscribers under PECR reg. 2: marketing emails need no prior consent if you identify yourself and give an opt-out address. Sole-trader advisers count as individuals and need consent or a soft opt-in (reg. 22(3)). Screen numbers against the TPS and Corporate TPS before calling.

Questions

Finance and insurance: frequently asked questions

Where a record carries a UK SIC code (from the Companies House match, which is in progress), yes: 66.22. Otherwise we select by business category and name on request; the quote states how precise the selection is. The code does not separate brokers from agents, and because firms choose it themselves, some brokers sit in 66.19 or 66.29; we can add those codes.

No. FCA status is not a column; check a firm on the Financial Services Register.

Companies and LLPs, yes, without prior consent, if you identify yourself and offer an opt-out. Sole traders need consent or a soft opt-in, and an address such as jane.smith@broker.co.uk is personal data under UK GDPR. Details: PECR rules for B2B email and calls.
