A company database is only as trustworthy as the person who builds it. That is why you will find here who runs the website, where the data come from, how we work with them and what we deliberately do not do.

Operator

firmdat.co.uk is run by Martin Adamec as a sole trader, in business since . Prices shown are the full price – nothing is added. The full provider details are in the legal notice.

The data and the website are looked after by one person who has worked with public registers for years. So emails are answered by the person who actually prepares the data. We would rather say openly what is missing from the data than promise completeness we cannot prove.

How the data are created

This is how the UK company database is created:

  1. Basic data. Name, address, phone and website come from the open map data of Overture Maps (licence CDLA Permissive 2.0). Only named places with sufficient confidence are kept; natural features such as mountains or lakes are left out.
  2. Details published by the businesses themselves. We read the contact and legal pages of company websites for email addresses; this collection is still running. Addresses shared by several unrelated businesses are not counted as their own.
  3. Matching with Companies House (in progress). The free Companies House snapshot will add the company number, company type, status and SIC codes to matched records. It contains no phone numbers or email addresses.
  4. Attaching details. We only assign details to a record when characteristics match. Phone numbers are kept as listed in the map data, and a business with several locations can still appear more than once.

Details and limits of each source are described on the data sources and methodology page.

What we do not do

  • We do not buy in old lists. The database is based on open data, the public register and company websites, not on resold address lists of unclear origin.
  • We do not supply consumer data. The data are B2B only: businesses, self-employed people and institutions.
  • We do not sell consent. An export is not an opt-in list. Under PECR you may email limited companies without consent if you identify yourself and offer an opt-out, but sole traders and partnerships outside Scotland need consent or a soft opt-in (reg. 22(3)), and phone numbers must be screened against TPS and CTPS before sales calls. PECR overview
  • We do not promise complete accuracy. Sources contain errors, contact details go out of date. We state how current the data are and how complete each field is, and we correct reported errors.
  • We do not do your legal check for you. As the buyer, you are responsible for your own use.
