Architectural practices and engineering consultancies in the UK

Architectural practices, landscape architects and planning consultancies, civil, structural and building services engineers, surveyors and testing laboratories: for building product manufacturers, CAD and BIM software vendors and publishers who want to reach specifiers by post or enrich their CRM.

Our UK dataset holds 2,676,396 records (as at 4 November 2026); they are not yet assigned to industries. The quote states the size available for this industry.

Export of the whole industry: £349 (full price). Selections by nation, postcode area or your own filters are quoted on request.

Official statistics: 81,090 businesses in the UK according to ONS, UK business: activity, size and location 2026 (enterprises in March 2026, published 24 September 2026). Division 71 architectural and engineering activities and related technical consultancy, technical testing and analysis. This is the size of the market, not the size of our dataset.

What counts as Architects and engineering consultancies

The industry corresponds to division 71 of UK SIC 2007: architectural and engineering activities and related technical consultancy (group 71.1) and technical testing and analysis (71.20).

The UK subclasses separate architecture (71.11/1) from planning and landscape architecture (71.11/2) and split engineering into three subclasses. Quantity surveyors are not here: they are coded 74.90/2.

Architects and engineers: registers of people, not practices

The title “architect” is protected by law, and engineering titles come with a national register. Both registers list individuals; a practice is identified through Companies House or its website.

Architects Register
Under section 20 of the Architects Act 1997, nobody may practise or carry on business under a name or title containing “architect” unless registered; “naval architect”, “landscape architect” and “golf-course architect” are exempt. The Architects Registration Board keeps the register of UK architects, and anyone can search it.
Engineering Council
The Engineering Council holds the national register of professionally registered engineers and technicians, with the titles Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng), Engineering Technician (EngTech) and ICT Technician (ICTTech).
Testing laboratories
UKAS, the national accreditation body for the UK, keeps a directory of accredited organisations, searchable by type, name, region or category. Accreditation is not a column in our export.

Not in the export

  • discipline and specialisation in detail
  • ARB registration or chartered status of staff
  • project references and awards
  • number of employees and fee income
  • names of directors and project architects

These 15 columns are included.

Architecture, structures or services: the discipline is barely in the code

Subclasses 71.12/2 and 71.12/9 combine very different disciplines, from structural design to building and land surveying. A selection by discipline is not possible from the code alone; the practice’s website usually shows it, so make the website a required field.

The Act protects the title, not the work. A firm may use “architects” in its name only if its architectural business is controlled and supervised by a registered person (s. 20(3)); a design firm without that word in its name falls outside the rule. Searching company names for “architect” therefore misses part of the market.

Sole practitioners and partnerships in England, Wales or Northern Ireland count as individuals under PECR: email needs consent or a soft opt-in (reg. 22(3)), and a letter needs the Art. 14 UK GDPR information.

Example request

Example request: we make façade systems and are looking for architectural practices (71.11/1) in London, the South East and the East of England with a website, for a postal mailing with technical documents. Please leave out testing laboratories. How many records is that?

Questions

Architects and engineering consultancies: frequently asked questions

UK SIC does not show registration, and the ARB register lists people, not practices. Whether a practice’s architects are registered can be checked there case by case; we do not copy the register.

Land surveyors are, in 71.12/2, and chartered building surveyors in 71.12/9. Quantity surveyors are coded 74.90/2 (quantity surveying activities), outside division 71; they can be added to a request.

To a practice run as a limited company or LLP, yes, without prior consent, if you identify yourself and give a valid opt-out address (PECR reg. 23). To a sole practitioner or a partnership in England, Wales or Northern Ireland only with consent or under the soft opt-in. Details: PECR rules for B2B email and calls.
