What counts as Health, social care and wellbeing

The industry covers section Q of UK SIC 2007 (human health and social work activities) plus classes 96.02 (hairdressing and other beauty treatment) and 96.04 (physical well-being activities). The ONS figure counts enterprises: a group with many care homes or clinics counts once, however many locations it has.

Hairdressing and beauty treatment is a large block of its own next to health and care; barbers, beauty parlours and manicurists are coded 96.02, spas, saunas and massage salons 96.04. Both can be requested separately from the health professions where a record carries the code; otherwise by business category on request.

Care regulators and professional registers

Health and social care providers are regulated nation by nation, and health professionals are registered individually. Some of these data are open; none of them replaces a company list.

CQC (England)
The Care Quality Commission publishes a care directory of every place in England where it regulates care, from hospitals, care homes and GPs to dentists and home care agencies, usually updated weekly under the Open Government Licence. It contains no email addresses, but links to websites.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
Care services are regulated by the Care Inspectorate in Scotland and by Care Inspectorate Wales; all independent healthcare providers in Wales must register with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales. In Northern Ireland the RQIA monitors and inspects health and social care services.
Professional registers
The General Dental Council registers dental professionals, and the HCPC register covers physiotherapists and other health and care professions. These registers list people, not practices, and a professional’s registration is not a column in our export.

Not in the export

  • CQC or other inspection ratings
  • NHS or private status and contracts
  • number of beds, chairs or treatment rooms
  • names of owners, practice managers and registered managers
  • health data of any kind

These 15 columns are included.

Practice, care or salon: three target groups in one industry

The industry links very different businesses. A dental supplier needs 86.23, a care software vendor 87 and 88, a cosmetics wholesaler 96.02. Name the group in your request, not just the industry.

A care group or a dental chain is one company with many locations. The CQC directory lists locations, Companies House lists companies, and our export follows the business listings; for a mailing to each home or practice, ask for site addresses.

Where a practitioner, physiotherapist or salon owner trades as a sole trader, the business details are personal data: a letter needs the Art. 14 UK GDPR information, and email needs consent or a soft opt-in (PECR reg. 22(3)). The export contains no health data and no patient information of any kind.

Yes, hairdressing and other beauty treatment (96.02) and physical well-being activities such as spas (96.04) belong to this industry. Where a record carries a UK SIC code (from the Companies House match, which is in progress), they can be requested separately from health and care.
