Energy, water and waste management companies in the UK

Electricity and gas suppliers, generators and solar and wind operators, heat network operators, water and sewerage companies, waste collection, skip hire, recycling and remediation firms: for plant manufacturers, service providers and consultants who want to reach this group by post or size up their market.

Our UK dataset holds 2 676 396 records (as at 4 novembre 2026); they are not yet assigned to industries. The quote states the size available for this industry.

Export of the whole industry: £309 (full price). Selections by nation, postcode area or your own filters are quoted on request.

Official statistics: 15 720 businesses in the UK according to ONS, UK business: activity, size and location 2026 (enterprises in March 2026, published 24 September 2026). Sections D electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (6,885) and E water supply, sewerage and waste management (8,835) combined. This is the size of the market, not the size of our dataset.

What counts as Energy, water and waste

The industry combines two sections of UK SIC 2007: D (electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply) and E (water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities).

Section D can also contain companies set up to own a single solar farm or wind project, with no staff or premises of their own. If you want operating suppliers and service businesses, filter by website; the legal form helps only for records already matched with Companies House. Firms that install solar panels are not here but in construction (43.21).

Licences and registrations: one public register per regulator

In this industry the regulator usually knows every operator. The registers serve oversight and the public, not marketing.

Ofgem
Ofgem is the energy regulator for Great Britain. It issues the licences that gas transporters, shippers and suppliers need, as well as licences for electricity generation, transmission and supply, among others, and publishes licences and licence conditions on its public register.
Ofwat
Ofwat is the economic regulator for the water and sewerage sectors in England and Wales.
Waste carriers, brokers and dealers
A business that transports, buys, sells or disposes of waste, or arranges this for others, must register. In England that is with the Environment Agency, whose public register can be searched by name, registration number, address or distance from a postcode. Scotland (SEPA), Wales (Natural Resources Wales) and Northern Ireland register carriers separately.

Not in the export

  • installed capacity and type of plant
  • licence types, permits and their conditions
  • network or supply areas
  • owners, investors and council shareholdings
  • names of operations or compliance managers

Supplier, generator or waste firm: ask separately

Sections D and E attract different vendors. Makers of metering and grid equipment want suppliers and network businesses; vehicle, container and baler suppliers want waste firms. Name the group in your request, not just the section.

The waste carrier register also contains businesses whose main activity is not waste: anyone who carries construction and demolition waste needs an upper tier registration, including builders. Our industry follows the main activity, so a skip hire firm is here, while a builder with a carrier registration stays in construction.

Council waste and recycling services that are not run through a separate company are part of the council; councils have an industry of their own, Councils and public sector bodies.

Example request

Example request: we service transformers and switchgear and are looking for businesses in group 35.1 in Scotland and the North East with a website, for a postal mailing to the business address. Please leave out single-project solar companies without a website. How many records is that?

Questions

Energy, water and waste: frequently asked questions

Water and sewerage companies are, as businesses in divisions 36 and 37, wherever they appear in our sources. A council’s own waste service is part of the council unless it is run through a separate company; councils are a separate industry.

Yes, where a UK SIC code is available: division 38 (waste collection, treatment and disposal; materials recovery), optionally with 39 (remediation) and 37 (sewerage).

Limited companies are corporate subscribers under PECR (reg. 2): marketing emails need no prior consent, but you must say who you are and give a valid opt-out address. A sole-trader skip or waste business needs to have consented, or the soft opt-in must apply (reg. 22). Details: PECR rules for B2B email and calls.
