Shops, retailers and online sellers in the UK

Supermarkets and convenience stores, specialist food shops and off-licences, fashion and footwear, DIY, furniture and garden centres, health and beauty, petrol stations, market traders and online shops: for manufacturers, wholesalers, shopfitters and logistics providers who want to reach retailers by post or plan locations.

Our UK dataset holds 2,676,396 records (as at 4 November 2026); they are not yet assigned to industries. The quote states the size available for this industry.

Export of the whole industry: £309 (full price). Selections by nation, postcode area or your own filters are quoted on request.

Official statistics: 207,535 businesses in the UK according to ONS, UK business: activity, size and location 2026 (enterprises in March 2026, published 24 September 2026). Division 47 retail trade (215,930) excluding dispensing chemists (47.73: 6,550) and retail sale of medical and orthopaedic goods (47.74: 1,845). Retail via mail order houses or the internet (47.91: 41,135) is included, as are opticians, which the ONS only publishes within class 47.78. This is the size of the market, not the size of our dataset.

What counts as Retail and online retail

The industry is division 47 of UK SIC 2007 without dispensing chemists (47.73) and medical and orthopaedic goods, hearing aids included (47.74); these form their own industry. Internet and mail order retail (47.91) and market stalls (47.8) are included.

A shop that also runs a webshop is classified under its main range, not 47.91, because the company chooses its SIC code. To find online sellers, make the website a required field rather than relying on 47.91 alone.

No list of shops, but online sellers must say who they are

Three official sources help to identify retailers.

Online shops
Online sellers must give their name, geographic address, email address, any register number and, where their activity is subject to VAT, their VAT number (reg. 6 Electronic Commerce (EC Directive) Regulations 2002). That is why a webshop’s email and VAT number are usually on its website.
Food hygiene ratings
The Food Standards Agency publishes food hygiene rating data as open data, updated daily, with business types such as “Retailers - supermarkets/hypermarkets”. Scotland runs its own Food Hygiene Information Scheme.
Companies House
Retail chains are companies whose registered office is often a head office, not a shop. Shops run by sole traders are not registered at Companies House.

Range and location: what the SIC code shows

UK SIC classifies retailers by main range: a cycle shop with a workshop is in 47.64 (sporting equipment), a garden centre in 47.76, a newsagent in 47.11. If you want a particular range, name the class.

For location planning the address matters most. For chains the registered office is often not where goods are sold, and branches are not guaranteed as separate records.

An email address published under reg. 6 is not consent. A shop run by a limited company is a corporate subscriber; a sole trader or a partnership in England, Wales or Northern Ireland counts as an individual under PECR reg. 2 and needs consent or a soft opt-in (reg. 22(3)). Post is not covered by PECR.

Questions

Retail and online retail: frequently asked questions

Yes. Pure online retailers are in 47.91; shops with a webshop are under their main range. Making the website a required field captures both.

Pharmacies (47.73) and hearing aid and orthopaedic retailers (47.74) are not; they are in Pharmacies, opticians and hearing care. Opticians have their own subclass, 47.78/2, inside retail; that industry groups them with pharmacies.

Shops run by a company or LLP, yes, without prior consent, if you identify yourself and include an opt-out. Sole traders, and partnerships outside Scotland, need consent or a soft opt-in. Details: PECR rules for B2B email and calls.
